Rehabilitation Program

Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.

Admission Requirements:

  • A graduate GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • GRE or MAT scores (TOEFL when appropriate for international applicants). GRE to include Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytic sections.
  • Three letters of recommendation, including statements regarding ability to pursue advanced graduate study in student's preferred specialization area.
  • Professional / scholarly writing sample (Provide a 3 page paper describing the major challenges facing rehabilitation today).
  • Personal interview (in person or via telephone or tape).
  • Relevant experience (3 years recommended).
  • A master's degree from a CORE accredited Rehabilitation Counseling Program. If a student has a different degree, s/he may have to take deficiency coursework determined by the faculty. 
  • Completed Ph.D./Ed.D./Ed.S. Departmental Application.

*Exceptions to specific admissions requirements may be made at the discretion of the admissions committee.

Qualifying Exam

A qualifying oral examination is required prior to or upon completion of 18 units of coursework. Knowledge and experience in the field will be assessed. Students will provide clearly written goals related to what they expect to do in their doctoral program and with their future career. Students will be expected to use a scholarly APA style to construct a written description of the underlying philosophy of rehabilitation. This response should include at least three scholarly references and consist of a maximum of 1000 words.

A minimum of 70 units including 18 dissertation units. Students may transfer up to 9 units from another institution.

Supporting Workshops:

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one series of Writing Workshops, as approved by their committee.

Minor: depends on minor committee (12 units)

A student from outside the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation and School Psychology wishing to complete a minor in the department will be required to complete a minimum of 12 units.

Preliminary Examination

Students are required to complete an 8-hour written examination in the major, 4 hours in the minor, and a major and minor oral examination of 2-3 hours.

Dissertation (18 units)
