CASS Project

The Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) is an international development and peace scholarship program founded in 1985 and administered by Georgetown University.

The University of Arizona 's CASS Project is a teacher education program hosted by the Department of Language, Reading and Culture in the College of Education. The visiting teachers participating in the CASS Project represent El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. The CASS teachers live in Tucson for eleven months, arriving in January and leaving in December each year.

Their professional development program consists of three major components:

  • Internships and professional service in local schools and community settings.
  • Formal courses offered at the U. of A. in Spanish designed to increase their pedagogical knowledge and skills.
  • An English-as-a-Second-Language program that includes coursework and community based experiences.

The CASS scholars studying at the University of Arizona are highly qualified community leaders from economically disadvantaged rural areas who have demonstrated a strong commitment to return and serve their home communities. The purpose of the CASS Project is to contribute to the development of the participant countries by providing access to education and preparing the local workforce to meet local social, economic and democratic goals.
