LRC Scholars Guidelines
The Department of Language, Reading and Culture hosts scholars from around the world, thereby enriching its scholarly program. Many of these scholars-in-residence collaborate with UA faculty on research projects. They also work with students and frequently lecture to classes and community groups.
Visiting Scholar Affiliation. The University of Arizona Department of Language, Reading and Culture (LRC) offers Visiting Scholar affiliation to scholars and professionals whose research and career interests intersect with LRC’s mission through education, faculty and student support, and community outreach. These affiliations with LRC are available based on the applicants' qualifications and subject to review by the LRC faculty. Affiliation will normally be for one semester to one year, but not to exceed two years. If interested in applying for a Visiting Scholar affiliation, please note the following procedures:
Eligibility & Application Procedures
A prospective LRC Visiting Scholar is required to have at least one of the following:
- A doctorate or its equivalent in a related field from a recognized university.
- Broad professional experience in theory, research and practice about language, reading and culture.
Applications for Visiting Scholar affiliation will be reviewed and are subject to approval by the LRC faculty.
To apply for LRC Visiting Scholar affiliation, please provide the following:
- Cover letter addressed to the LRC Department Head indicating:
a.Relevance of applicant's background to LRC’s mission and reasons for the proposed affiliation;
b.Proposed Department-related activities to be undertaken while an LRC Visiting Scholar (e.g., research) and the nature and source of any resources (e.g., computer, video equipment) required for these activities; and
c. Proposed duration of the requested affiliation. - A 500 word statement by the candidate relating the significance of planned research and/or scholarly activities and contribution to the department.
- Curriculum vitae or resume summarizing academic/professional history.

Period of Affiliation. Visiting Scholar status is granted for periods of one semester to one year (exceptions for one or two month appointments may be granted). Extensions are considered on a case-by-case basis and are not automatic. Extensions must be requested in writing at least three months prior to the end of the current appointment. The title of LRC Visiting Scholar may be used by the Visiting Scholar during the time of his or her official affiliation. Each Visiting Scholar will be requested to give a lecture on his or her research and/or scholarship.
Financial Support. Visiting Scholars must provide their own funding (either through grants, sabbatical salaries, Fulbright awards, or personal funds). The University of Arizona requires Visiting Scholars to have verifiable funding of at least US $935 per month for individual expenses; $327 per month for each dependent.
Visa Status. For scholars who require the IAP-66 form to obtain a J-1 visa, the UA Office of International Faculty & Scholars will require written proof of financial support (e.g., letter from institution, bank account records), the scholar's full name, date and place of birth; and similar information for any accompanying family members. All Visiting Scholars holding the J-1 visa must maintain health insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents. Listed below are the general provisions required for minimum coverage.
Proof of Coverage. All J-1 Exchange Visitors must prove health insurance coverage upon arrival at the University of Arizona. Visiting Scholars will not be able to begin their affiliation here until they show evidence of having purchased the appropriate insurance coverage. Visiting Scholars may purchase medical evacuation and repatriation insurance through UA Campus Health Services or by providing proof of self-insurance. Visitors are also required to have a TB test at Campus Health Services.
General Provisions
- Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness;
- A co-payment not greater than 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness
- A deductible not greater than $500 per accident or illness:
- A waiting period for pre-existing conditions that is reasonable by current industry standards
- Coverage for activities inherent to the exchange program.
Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Provisions - Coverage limits for expenses associate with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country must amount to not less than $10,000.
- Coverage limits for repatriation of remains must amount to not less than $7,500 in coverage.
Facilities and Services
Privileges. Visiting Scholars have the following privileges:
- UA ID card
- Borrowing privileges at UA libraries
- UA e-mail account available.
- Class and seminar privileges (An LRCVisiting Scholar may sit in on undergraduate and graduate level courses without having to pay UA auditing fees, IF the instructor is amenable to and approves of the Visiting Scholar's attendance and participation in the course.)
- Laboratory and other space privileges to the extent available.
- Purchase of parking permits and Artist Series tickets at faculty rates.
Office Space and Secretarial Services. LRC has limited office space. LRC will assign office space and facilities to LRC Visiting Scholars when possible. LRC has no secretarial services to offer Visiting Scholars. Main Library Carrels are occasionally available. There is a waiting list for carrels. To request, please fill out the Main Library's carrel application. LRC will assist with the application.
Computer Facilities. Visiting Scholars have access to the Instructional Technology Facility with Macs and Windows platform PCs, color printer, and flatbed
Mail. Recently arrived scholars can have mail directed to the Department on a temporary basis.
