Research: Adolescent literacy, teacher education, content area literacy.
Teaching: Adult literacy, adolescent literacy, reading comprehension, content area literacy, and leadership in adolescent literacy programs.
Patricia L. Anders (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-Madison) is on sabbatical during Fall 2008, having just stepped down from her position as Head of the Department of Language, Reading and Culture at the University of Arizona. This will be a "re" semester: reviewing, reevaluating, relaxing, reflecting, reassessing, etc. During this time she will continue her scholarship and work in the area of adolescent literacy. She is available to meet with students, contact the LRC main office. In general, she is responsible for LRC 435 "Content Area Literacy in a Multicultural School," which is a required course for secondary teacher certification. At the graduate level, she regularly teaches LRC 640 "Adult Basic Literacy," LRC 641 "Developmental and Academic Literacy" and LRC 635 "Content Area Reading and Writing." Her research and scholarly activity focuses on content area literacy and professional development. She is the co-author of LITERACY INSTRUCTION IN THE CONTENT AREAS, URBAN LITERACY PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES and UNDERSTANDING READERS' UNDERSTANDING, as well as contributing to several other publications.Dr. Anders is a leader in the American Education Research Association (Secretary of Division C; Chair of the SIG: Basic Research in Reading); the International Reading Association (member of the Board of Directors); National Conference Research in Language and Literacy (President and Secretary), and she has just been elected president of the National Reading
Conference.
She is the recipient of the "Outstanding Research in Teacher Education Award" (AERA), the "University of Arizona Graduate and Professional Education Teaching and Mentoring Award" and was recently inaugurated into the Reading Hall of Fame.
