Will I be able to choose where I student teach?

All University of Arizona student teachers will student teach in the Tucson area. There are 8 different school districts available and students are asked to list 2 school districts they would prefer.

Can I teach in Phoenix? In another state? In another country?

No, all University of Arizona students in the College of Education must teach in the Tucson area.

How many weeks are required for student teaching?

The student teaching requirement is a minimum of 15 weeks.

What does Field Based Elementary Methods mean?

The semester before student teaching, elementary students are assigned to an Elementary Field Based Methods site at an elementary school. The program is from Monday – Thursday and students will take their Methods courses and spend the rest of the day in elementary classrooms.

I am a secondary student teacher. Do I student teach in my major or minor subject area?

All secondary student teachers student teach in their major subject area.

I am an elementary student teacher. In what grades can I student teach?

You will student teach in an elementary school in grades Kindergarten – Sixth Grade.

Can I student teach in a middle school?

If you wish to student teach in a middle school, it is important that you are “highly qualified” to teach in that content area or the school will not be able to hire you. You would need to check with your academic advisor to see if you were “highly qualified.”

I am a secondary student teacher. In what grades can I student teach?

Secondary student teachers normally teach in a high school or middle school. ( Middle school 7th or 8th grade) Some students who are getting a K-12 teaching certificate, may spend 8 weeks in an elementary school and 8 weeks at the middle school or high school.

When I finish student teaching will I be able to graduate?

You will need to have a “degree check” and visit your advisor to make sure you have taken all the required classes needed to graduate.
