Undergraduate Majors and Degrees

Early Childhood Education (ECE)

Required for students who plan to teach children aged birth through kindergarten. This program is also strongly encouraged for teachers in grades 1-3.

Further details on this program will be provided in spring 2008.

Elementary Education

Provides preparation to teach grades 1-8.

If you are considering teaching grades 1-3, also see Early Childhood Education.

Secondary Education

Prepares students for teaching positions in middle and high schools. Students must choose a teaching major; some majors also require a teaching minor.

If you are planning to teach any of the following subjects in grades 7-12, please be aware that the certification programs are offered by other colleges:

Cross-Categorical Special Education (K-12)

Designed to prepare special education teachers to work with students with mild to moderate challenges in the areas of learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional and behavioral disorders.

Deaf Studies (non-teaching)

Offers specialization in the following areas: 1) Deaf Studies/American Sign Language; or 2) Educational Interpreting– Deaf/Hard of Hearing.

NOTE: If you plan to pursue a master's degree in deaf education and teach in a deaf or hard-of-hearing classroom, please consider applying to an elementary or secondary education program for your bachelor's degree in order to gain knowledge of the teaching profession.

Rehabilitation (non-teaching)

Prepares individuals to become human service workers, e.g. job placement specialists, case managers, independent living center staff persons, mental health workers, group home workers, supported employment specialists, and job coaches.
